CHAPTER 9

Luna and the blackbird are waiting for me just beyond the hole, inside a bigger cave. My torch flame bounces around, making the hanging stalactites appear to wriggle. I can hear a faint dripping noise in the distance.

The spiders crawl past Luna, and the group of us march further into the mountain, with the blackbird flying between me and my dog. We seem to be moving up, towards the top of the mountain.

I pass a bunch of iron ore and coal and make a mental note to come back here to mine one day.

I shake my head: What am I thinking? I don’t ever want to come back here!

Finally, I see a faint purple glow from up ahead, almost like a velvet blanket covering the jagged rock edges. I know we are close now.

I suddenly get goosebumps. Do dogs get goosebumps? I wonder as I look at Luna. Or would they be dogbumps? I shake my head again. No, Amy! This is not the time to get distracted!
